St. John's was completed in 1842 by the collective efforts of five Polk brothers and their slaves.  One of the brothers was Leonidas Polk, an Episcopal clergyman, who later traded his clerical robes for a Confederate uniform.  The "Fighting Bishop" fought in many Civil War campaigns, and died from a bullet wound in 1864.
